I'm 30. Weird. I sometimes feel like I'm still 17.
Minus the flirting.
And plus a few extra pounds.
I woke up yesterday morning feeling pretty bummed. I don't want to be 30. 30-year-olds, in my opinion, have to take life seriously. They have to have it figured out. They have to grow up. They have to get wrinkles. They have to watch their metabolism slow down, decrease their high-heel mileage, and begin the descent into hating amusement park rides.
This all makes it sound like I'm turning 60 instead of 30.
So the day started out a little... meh. Bret either forgot, or didn't think it was important to say "Happy Birthday." (he's not a celebrater. It's just the way he was raised. Birthdays aren't a big deal to him. Although, for the record, he already took me out to dinner earlier this weekend.)
So I wallowed in my thirty-ness.
Facebook posts came.
Some even made me cry because they were so sweet.
Then my sister called and my little 2-year-old nephew sang "Happy Birthday" to me! It made me laugh and brightened my mood. (And Bret didn't totally ignore my birthday either. The man makes me laugh every single day and did make an effort to make me feel special.)
Maybe today would be good after all.
Went to church, where we had five, yes FIVE baby blessings. It left about 15 minutes for the rest of the meeting. It was good though. The blessings were beautifully given, special, and sweet. It wasn't as hard of an occasion for me as it usually is.
We got home around 2:30 to the smell of roast in the crock pot. Mmmm! Fifteen minutes later, the power went out. Uh oh. The roast had been simmering for 5 hours already, so it was cooked all the way, just not yet "flaky, fall-apart, tender" the way we like it. With no idea how long it would take for the power to kick back on, we stuck the roast in the fridge and headed to Mesa. (It's pushing the upper nineties outside right now. Didn't want to bake in our house).
This was the best part. Laughing our heads off with family. First with my in-laws, then with my fam. My sister made me a delicious little cookie-brownie number. They sang to me and I got to blow out the matches (no candles at Mom's.)
Then I fell asleep in the car on the way back to Glendale. Ironically, the power had only been out for about 30 minutes. But if it hadn't blacked out, we wouldn't have gone to Mesa. Truly, a blessing.
All in all, a lovely birthday. Sundays make it low-key but family makes it awesome.
I have watched several of my friends bemoun the fact that they have turned thirty. So I have decided to embrace every age with glee. Birthdays for me haven't been major milestones for me for a while. i spent my 16'th birthday snowed in at a speech and debate tournament, I have no idea what i did for my, 18th, my 21st was just like any other birthday, the only thing special about my 25th was that i got my eyebrow pierced. also Ever sense I read Brave new world I have been disgusted by our societies' obsession with youth. So I am one of those crazies who is actually looking forward Turning well 40, cause then I get to say I'm almost 50 when people ask how old I am.
Happy Birthday if I forgot to facebook that yesterday! :) And 30 will be awesome, you'll see!!
I'm glad you had a fun day. Brandon was commenting the other day about how we're nearly there (we both turn 28 in Oc/Nov) and I was like, "Whatever! Thirty is awesome!" I keep saying that to myself because I'm afraid if I don't I'll fall into the "oh-crap-I'm-getting-old" pit, and I don't want that.
We should go Dancewalking soon, in celebration of your 30th birthday. We can listen to poppy boy bands and pretend we're thirteen :-)
Glad it all worked out great! You are such a youthful spirit, you'll never have to worry about getting "old." Its one of the things I love about you!
ps- love the layout too!!!
30s are awesome! Seriously. No need to "have it all figured out." I surely don't. And who cares! 30s are when you can be YOU with no apologies. 30s are when you figure yourself out...who cares what the rest of the world thinks. 30s are for feeling great, embracing life and change and just A FEW little laugh lines. ;) You will love it! Sad that we missed the party at Moms but glad you had so much fun! xo
Happy Birthday! Pretty sure we all feel young and never our "real" age. I am almost there myself and already have some wrinkles that aren't going away (sniff, sniff!). Ah, chalk it up to living a good life.
Pretty layout! Glad your birthday was fun. Really...30 is no big deal....wait until 50! :-/
I laughed my head off at this post. You are such a good writer and getting better every day. Someday you will definitely publish a book. And Happy Birthday :)
love the new layout and happy birthday American Ames :). Don't worry 30 is the new 20's I heard ;).
I so feel that same way about 30! haha why? It is really not THAT big of a deal, pretty much all my friends are 30 and they are still normal! haha
I wonder if the baby blessings are better now that you have a baby on the horizon? I can't stand them really and we have one about every other week!
Happy Birthday!!! I have a feeling your 30's are gonna rock!
Happy Birthday!! I'm so glad you had a good birthday! My husband is just like Bret with birthdays. He is getting better though. I've heard the 30s are good. I'm hoping they are right! If anything now, you can impart all your wisdom that comes with 'old age' to those 20-somethings who don't have it figured out yet!
Wow, five baby blessings! I think that would put me over the top. We only had one. Like Alesha, I still don't like them. Maybe someday that will change, you give me hope!
I'm so glad that your special day turned out well. Happy Belated Birthday! And being 30 doesn't mean being old and dreary or giving up the love of anything. I'll be....33 in September (had to do the math since I can't remember my own age) and I don't feel old at all. Tired, yes. Old, no. I read that most women consider their 33rd and 34th years to be the best. So we've still got much to look forward to! :D
HAPPY BIRTHDAY! 30 is totally awesome! I'm right on your heels, girl! YAY.
I'm so glad you had a lovely birthday! YAY. You are so awesome.
I hear, from Carrie, that sex is better in your 30's. So at least there's that :)
Sue, too, I think.
